John R. Smith

I received my Ph.D. from Columbia University as a member of the Center for Telecommunications Research and Image and Advanced Television Lab.

I am now a Manager, Research Staff Member at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center.

As part of my research at Columbia, I developed image and video search and retrieval systems (circa 1993 – 1997):

  • WebSEEk: image and video search engine for the Web,
  • VisualSEEk: color photograph retrieval system,
  • SaFe: integrated spatial and feature image system and
  • CBVQ: content-based visual query system.

I am now on to other things at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center (circa 1997 – present):

  • MPEG-7: Multimedia content description standard,
  • TRECVID: TREC video retrieval and other things ….

Here are links to some projects, research work, demos and papers.  I apologize of the demo links are not always working since the demos are now somewhat old.  They are kept running on a best-effort basis only.

SaFe demonstrates a new paradigm for integrated spatial and feature image querying. Search through several test sets of images, including: symbolic, synthetic and photographic images (Java).

Demo

WebSEEk is a content-based image and video search engine. Search throught more than 650,000 images and videos from the web.

Demo

VisualSEEk: a region-based, content-based image and video retrieval system (Java).

Demo

CBVQ (content-based visual query system): demonstrates content-based image retrieval using color, texture and color composition. Search using any image from the Web by providing its address.

Demo

Space and frequency adaptive wavelet packets: demonstrates new method for adaptive image compression.

Demo

Publications: history of papers to 2003.

Papers

The ADVENT lab at Columbia.
