Huitao was a doctoral student at Columbia from 1996 to 2000. He joined HP Labs on Sept. 2000 as a research scientist after completing his Ph.D. thesis. At HP, Huitao worked on various projects related to image processing, machine learning and data mining. In particular, he developed a high quality automatic redeye removal algorithm, which was widely used inside HP and was successfully implemented in a wide range of HP products, including HP Photosmart printers, AIOs and cameras. His work on redeye detection was reported by main stream media such as Wall Street Journal and USA Today. In addition, Huitao also developed various face detection algorithms, the particular successful one was based on the original Adaboost technology developed by Viola and Jones at Compaq Labs. Starting Jan. 2006, Huitao has recently joined Yahoo as a senior research engineer. He is currently doing various data mining and machine learning related projects that are driving Yahoo's portal optimization.
